A two-alarm fire broke out in an apartment building on 237 East 176 th Street in Mount Hope at 6:11 a.m. on Thursday, February 15, leaving one person dead and another in critical condition. Four other people were displaced. Officials say the fire started on the third floor of the three-story building before spreading to the other floors.
According to police, the man, who was pronounced dead at the scene, is believed to be 30 to 40 years old. A woman, around 50 years old, was taken to the hospital with critical injuries. One firefighter was also treated for minor injuries.
The FDNY responded with 25 units, including 106 fire and EMS personnel. The responding personnel were confronted with significant fire conditions on the second and third stories, as well as the attic, according to FDNY Deputy Chief Christopher Ritchie, who appeared at a press conference at the scene of the fire Thursday morning.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
