Another day, another apartment fire, unfortunately, in New York. The fire occurred early Tuesday at 12:30 am in the Flushing section in Queens at 142-20 Franklin Ave., between Union Street and Bowne Street.
Two people were critically injured from the blaze that broke out on the sixth floor of the building. They were rescued and rushed to New York-Presbyterian Queens Hospital. A firefighter was also injured and taken to the hospital for treatment.
Over 100 firefighters and EMS personnel fought the blaze.
As flames engulfed the building, residents had to evacuate in the middle of the night. One tenant commented to PIX11News that there was chaos: “People were shouting, people were yelling. People were crawling outside. I smell smoke.”
The extent of the building’s damage and the status of the injured individuals are unknown. The tragedy has once again highlighted the risk of fires in densely populated metropolitan areas like New York City, triggering questions about safety and preparedness.
Investigation into the cause of the fire is underway.
