A fire erupted at an apartment building at 315 Sutter Avenue in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn on Wednesday, February 14, at 9:50 a.m., injuring at least 12 people. The fire occurred on the fourth floor of the 22-story Hughes Apartments building.
According to reports, firefighters rushed past the burning blaze, with no water supply for protection, to rescue a man from a fourth-floor apartment on fire.
“We had to make a life-saving decision, which is what we train for, and we did it positively, it worked out today,” said FDNY Lt. Salvatore Mirra.
About 80 firefighters and first responders sped to the scene, fighting the blaze until it was brought under control by 10:20 a.m., FDNY officials said.
Videos shared on the Citizen app show smoke spilling out of many apartment windows as emergency personnel glance down from an apartment above. Another video showed a woman hanging out a window, holding a bag, while smoke poured from an adjacent window.
Fire marshals are investigating the cause of the fire.
