On Thursday morning, more than 140 firefighters from the FDNY responded to a three-alarm blaze that destroyed a Brooklyn residential building. Several families are displaced due to the fire, which ignited on the second floor of a 100-year-old four-story building on 9th Street near 3rd Avenue in Gowanus.
The fire spread to the upper floors and the adjacent building, filling the neighborhood for several blocks with black smoke.
The firefighters used a high-tech drone to help battle the heavy flames. “We are using our drone from an aerial view, and it gives us a live feed to determine some of the hotspots,” said FDNY Deputy Chief Kevin Woods.
Everyone got out safely, including a resident with a son who uses a wheelchair. A pair of firefighters suffered minor injuries while battling the fire.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
