Update: Bronx Fire that Injured Child Had No Smoke Detectors, Working Fire Alarms

An apartment fire at 3514 Rochambeau Ave., between East Gun Hill Road and East 212th Street, in the Norwood section of the Bronx, on Friday, February 14, that left six people injured, including a two-year-old child, had no smoke detectors and working fire alarms. One of the tenants in the building said she never heard a fire alarm go off.  Heavy smoke in a third-floor unit spread to the  ourth and fifth floors of the six-story apartment building. There were several rescues, including the two-year-old child who was removed from the fifth floor.

The child suffered smoke inhalation and has been in the hospital ever since. FDNY Bronx Borough Commander Mike Woods said, “Originally, she took a lot of smoke in her apartment, and then we had to transfer her up to the roof until it became safe enough to remove her down to the building to EMS that was awaiting.”

Approximately 95 firefighters were on the scene.

Fifteen families have been displaced. The cause of the fire has not been determined yet.
