Upper West Side High-Rise Apartment Fire Kills Woman, Critically Injures Another

Early on Thursday morning, March 13, a fire on the 14 th floor of a 15-story high-rise apartment on the Upper West Side, at 175 West 73 rd Street, between Amsterdam and Columbus Avenue, left a  41- year-old woman dead and a 77-year-old woman fighting for her life at New York-Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center.

According to law enforcement sources, the fire just before 3:15 am. Twenty units, including 78 firefighters and EMS personnel, responded.

Firefighters pulled two women from the home, both of whom suffered from burns and smoke inhalation. The women were found in the bathroom, perhaps sheltering from the flames.

EMS rushed the 41-year-old home health aide to Mount Sinai West Hospital, where she was pronounced dead a short time later. The 77-year-old woman is listed in critical condition.  FDNY marshals are investigating the cause of the fire.
