Woman Dies in Crown Heights, Brooklyn Fire

An 85-year-old woman was killed Friday morning, February 21, in her third-floor unit in a Brooklyn apartment fire on Bedford Avenue in Crown Heights. Her apartment and a fourth-floor unit were damaged in the four-story building.

The woman immigrated to New York City from Haiti when she was 20.

The FDNY received the call about the fire just after 8:00 am. The cause of the fire is being investigating.

According to the FDNY, in 2024, there were 2,158 serious fires and emergencies in New York City, which are fires that require a full one-alarm assignment or higher. The number of fire deaths in 2024 was 78, with electrical fires being the leading cause of fatalities, including six lithium-ion-
related deaths.
